When The Lights Go Down In The City
Our concert picks for the week of 6/9-6/15.
**Free stuff alert**: Guest lists aren't just for writers, weasels and friends of the band anymore. They're also for the fine, fine readers of SFist.
Engage the Expand-O-Tron to get you +1 on the guest list for:
Amusement Parks on Fire at Popscene on Thursday, June 16thSpeaking of Popscene, tonight MSN Music presents a "Popscene Appreciation Party" with Kasabian and Mad Action. When MSN Music throws an "Appreciation Party," that means they want to market to you hipster tastemakers. The upside for you is that the show is free. Everything's a trade-off, people. Pinback will be fashioning their quietly complex melodies at the Fillmore, and the Mission Creek Music Festival continues tonight through Sunday. In other festival news, Djangofest, a Gypsy Jazz acoustic guitar festival, kicks off tonight. See some Djangofest artists for free at Amoeba this afternoon and on Friday.
The Futureheads at The Fillmore on Saturday, June 18th

Emiliana Torrini dodges Bjork comparisons at Slim's on Friday. Actually, her new record Fisherman's Woman sounds a little Nick Drake-ish. Call in sick to your day job for Live 105's BFD featuring Foo Fighters, Social D and Jimmy Eat World. There's also a band called Jackson United in the lineup, which makes us wonder if our editor might be moonlighting. Head to Mezzanine before 10pm for a chance to get into the BFD Afterparty for free to listen to guest DJs from Sleater-Kinney, Ash, Hot Hot Heat and more. MCMF presents hot rock from The National at Cafe Du Nord. If you refuse to click here and listen to their album Alligator right now, then you are just plain lazy. If you're in the mood for art-love, go to Club Six for On Six Gallery's one year anniversary featuring tons of art by the likes of David Choe (we love him) and music by Paradise Boys, DJ Jefrodisiac and more.
MCMF continues Saturday with foolproof lineups at 12 Galaxies (Coachwhips' last show ever?!) and at Cafe du Nord with dance insomniacs Hey Willpower, Gravy Train and the dirty debonair disco of Luxxury. This has nothing to do with music, but we wish we had tickets to see Dave Attell at the Warfield, because his comedy show "Insomniac" amuses and horrifies us in the best possible way.
Our favorite fresh-faced family band Eisley returns once again to Slim's on Sunday, with their friends in Lovedrug and Pilotdrift opening. We keep hearing a lot about The Hold Steady, so we finally gave a listen to their record Separation Sunday. If you like speak-singing, grindy guitars and standard rock swagger, see the band at Bottom of the Hill on Sunday.
Monday night Cinema Drafthouse returns to the Independent with "Hitting The High Notes," a movie about the 2004 High Sierra Music Festival. Catch the Doves at the Fillmore, or get you some local alt-country at the Makeout Room with the co-ed crooners in Madera Road and the hollerin' rock of The Famous.
Wednesday night has something for everyone. Rob Swift and ?UESTLOVE descend upon Mighty with Oakland Faders and Alphazeta featuring talented locals DJ Zeph and Azeem. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks play at the Fillmore with the marvellous Martha Wainwright. Go here now to download the potty-mouthed brilliance of Martha's "BMFA," one of the best songs we've heard this year [NSFW]. You may have heard about some guys making a documentary about the Rock'n'Roll Camp For Girls. They answer our question of "Where are all the female guitar gods?" with a show featuring rock from Tribe 8, Rykarda Parasol, Inspect Her Gadget and more.
