SFist Watches: Animal Cops!

acsf.jpg
No, it's not Wednesday, but we wanted to make sure you all knew about the return of "Animal Cops San Francisco" on Animal Planet all this week at 7 and 10 p.m. We watched last night and fell in love all over again with those animal po-lice as they chased a dog through busy streets near Van Ness, rescued a neglected pooch with the most horrible tumor ever, and caught a possum in the Katherine Michiels School. (A possum?! Who knew possums existed in San Francisco, let alone were interested in alternative education?) Yeah, we cried watching it last night, and we'll probably cry again tonight. But it's a good kind of crying.

We love you, Animal Cops!

I know in Oakland, I practically had a pet possum in my yard one summer. And you know what? They really do play possum! I'd hear it in the trash, and when I opened the lid, that thing just sat there, stone still. It was the size of a small rabit. We had racoons, too, but they were a lot stealthier. Once, waking to the 7-11 across from the Piedmont Lane theater, I almost stepped on a skunk.

Not that that has anything to do with anything.

I'm glad possum sightings are a relatively rare occurence within San Francisco, because those are some freaky looking animals. With their furless faces, and fleshy hands. Ever seen one angry? It'll put the fear of God into you.

On the show last night the animal cop took it from the school all the way up to Bernal Heights and set him free on the hill. Which is nice and all, but what if the possum's family lives in Dolores Park or something? He's gonna have a hell of a time getting back there.

How is it possible to become an animal cop? Where can I go to get information? Thanks

San Francisco's "animal cops" are affliated with Animal Care and Control. Here's the contact page from their site--I'm sure they can answer your question!

I would like to become an animal cop, I am only 15 but I do plan on becoming one. but I do not know how to get info on how to become one. I live in a litle town and we do not have animal cops around here. I love animals, the only thing that would be a downside to this job is that I would probley get fired the first time I see somebody hurting an animal, lol

How would I apply to become an animal cop in San Francisco???

I would like to know if there is any way to purchase any clothing that says Animal Cops for my 8yr. old daughter. She wants to be an animal cop when she grows up and would like to wear something to school that shows that on career day.
