Where's Barry?

The New York Daily News is reporting that Major League Baseball is investigating Barry Bonds and looking into his various troubles. Dude has 99 problems and, yes, a, umm, "woman" is one. Let's see, there's possible income tax evasion, possible perjury, and the whole steroid thing. And then there's the latest problem- the surgeon who performed Barry's latest knee surgery, a Dr. Albert Ting, has been reprimanded twice by the California State Medical Board and is on probation for "unprofessional conduct." Among one of those things he’s been accused of is prescribing:

"dangerous drugs and controlled substances to friends and acquaintances, particularly athletes, for whom he kept no medical records or for whom the medical records were fictitious, inadequate or inaccurate."
Ting denies the charges and is the team physician of the San Jose Sharks (for what that's worth these days) so he isn't that much of a quack. Still, when you have a player accused of using illegal substances using a trainer known to disperse illegal substances then going to a doctor accused of making illegal prescriptions well, oy vay. Say this for Barry, he sure knows how to pick 'em, don't he?

Now you might be wondering what the Giants are doing about all of this and herein lies one of the craziest parts of this whale of a tale and that's this- the Giants supposedly have no idea where he is or what he's doing. In fact, they're said to be "freaking out" about all of this, although we'd all be much happier if they'd instead freak out about their almost comically bad bullpen. Barry supposedly has cut off most contact with the team and so like the rest of us, Peter Magowan and Brian Sabean can only find out what's up with their $18 million dollar player by checking out his blog. Talk about a great way of increasing traffic. Of course, Barry has always done his own thing and in most cases, it's worked out fairly well. It's just that right now, things don’t appear to be working out fairly well. Or maybe it is. We’d like to believe that a battered and bruised Barry is even now at some mountain retreat doing some zen-like wax on, wax off training with Dr. Ting as his combination Mr. Miyagi and Mickey the Trainer and that he'll come back stronger and better than before, but we don't know. And neither does the Giants.

Of course, all of this may just be a ruse. Since nobody knows anything and since a man who has never had medical set backs is suddenly having medical setbacks, there are rumors circulating through the internets that Barry's "surgeries" are really some nefarious deal made with Bud to lay low while the steroid witch-hunt blazes. According to the theory, he's really just riding out the season in Bermuda or Pago Pago. Kind of like Michael Jordan's first retirement and baseball career was some nefarious deal made with David Stern to lay low while Jordan’s gambling problem was being made public. Which is giving Bud way too much credit.

Either way, SFist would feel much better if somebody on the Giants can close out a game.
