This Weather Blows And It's Not Even Windy

What in the name of Sam Francisco is going on here? We paid our dues. We holed up in our homes for the winter storms. We crawled along in Bay Area traffic thanks to local drivers that panic when water falls on their car. We even put up with a wet early Spring. And what do we get? A rainy, cold, overcast mid-Spring. This blows.

Here we were gearing up with some great early season camping and hiking ideas and we feel like we should be recommending board games and cozy indoor bars. Well fark that. We're getting out this weekend (mostly because it's going to be worse Monday and Tuesday). So here are some things we like to do under the current conditions, after the jump.

Hike or bike up to the West Point Inn. They serve cider, treats and other warm snacks in a 100 year old Victorian at 1000 ft above sea level. (Or spend the night in their $30 cabins; free if you do chores) It's a great place to keep you focused if hiking in the rain and warm up. The fire trails are always better for biking when they aren't dried out.

Kayaking in the Watsonville Sloughs south of Santa Cruz. Have you ever seen an otter on TV/Aquarium/Zoo and thought those critters are sweet. Well we happen to live quite near one of their primary habitants. Bring a boat or rent kayaks and you can paddle in and out of wide wet land slough where they gather and eat. Plenty of stunning water birds too.

And, well, we know it's Spring, but the Sierras are getting fresh snow. If you can't go camping you may as well ride the snow. Rates are reduced at the mountains and the hotels. Heck there should be camping around 5,000" on the eastern slopes so you can ski and camp in the same weekend. We like Kirkwood for that action.

So bear down and hang on. Summer is truly on it's way. In fact we see some sun now.
