When The Lights Go Down In The City

Our concert picks for the week of 4/14-4/20.

Even a slow week in San Francisco presents discerning music fans with many good choices. Tonight Popscene invites fans of the Doves and Snow Patrol to check out music by Longview. Waifish British boys singing wistfully over jangly guitars -- now that's cutting edge! After an eight year hiatus, The Wedding Present returns with a new record entitled Take Fountain. Catch this rare opportunity to see them live at Slim's, with opener Crystal Skulls.

Lovemakers t-shirtFriday night, locals The Lovemakers try to keep their pants on at Cafe Du Nord. Even if you don't like their new wave sound, you have to admit their latest t-shirt design, pictured here, is pretty fresh. Rob Thomas does his solo thing at The Fillmore also on Friday. If you see SFist contest winner Mai Le there, say hi! A firm, congratulatory handshake would be a nice touch as well. Indie purists convene at Bottom of the Hill for The New Year and Silkworm.

Saturday night and beyond, after the jump.

Crooked Fingers have a new record out on merge called Dignity and Shame. Yep Roc-kers Dolorean open for them at the Great American on Saturday. Catch a free stoner rock recital by Black Mountain at Amoeba at 4pm. We'd consider our friend David Dondero local, if he didn't move around so darned much. His next record will be released on Conor Oberst's label Team-Love; perhaps he'll preview some new tunes at Hemlock on Saturday. Oakland's The Death Of A Party celebrate the release of their new EP The Shame of the Sweet at Bottom of the Hill.

On Tuesday, The Killers and Tegan and Sara play two shows in one night at the Fillmore. We've always wondered if it's better to go to the early show, when bands are fresh and full of energy, or to the late show, when they might get a chance to play longer. A dilemma, to be sure. SFist favorites The Ditty Bops and kooky chanteuse Regina Spektor play at Cafe Du Nord. Catch The Ditty Bops for free at Amoeba at 6pm. On Wednesday night, the dance party happens at the Independent with VHS or BETA and Electric Six.

How can you forget to mention Los Amigos Invisibles playing tonight, Friday the 15th, at Bimbos!? From Caracas, Venezuela, these guys write songs for dancing. And sex. A mix of latin funk, acid jazz, early disco, and ass shaking grooves...this is the most authentic South American partying I've come across without a passport!

Thanks for the tip, George!
