SFist Watches: Movies This Weekend

At SFist, we know when to hold them, when to fold them, and when to turn to the experts. That's why we asked SFist Jeremy, avid comic reader (and soon-to-be-published-comic-author) to provide insight into our Big Budget Pick of the Week. He's not joking at at when he says:

Does Robert Rodriguez's Sin City need more good press at this point? I doubt it. It's crazy that for once it seems non-comic fans are salivating for something as much as those of us familiar with the source materials (Frank Miller's comix of the same name, readily available in trade paperback form for nineteen bucks, U.S. a pop. Start with "The Hard Goodbye." My favorite is "A Dame to Kill For.").  It's chilling how closely the previews seem to mirror the panels in those books; from critics' accounts, the whole movie holds in that vein. Sin City satisfies love of pulp, as well as a desire for Tarantino-esque violent hijinx (he is, in fact, a guest director on this film). Mostly black and white, but for certain symbolic color uses (the literal, grotesque yellow coloring of the bastard in the "That Yellow Bastard" story thread, for instance), I'm anticipating a highly stylized picture that will be as faithful in tone as it is in visuals. Will this be the film that brings the general public to the comic shops in search of good indy materials? Doubt it; but perhaps it will further solidify the use of funny books as great sources for movie fodder, particularly ones that stay true to what made the comic versions successful (for one of the many, many poor examples see Elektra). As for Sin City? Can't. F'ing. Wait.

Thanks, Jer. We obviously couldn't have said it any better, and plan on seeing Sin City at one of of the many Bay Area Theaters at which it is being screened.

If you feel like heading over to Marin County, check out the Undiscovered Gems 2005 festival going on at the California Film Institute's Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center . The festival features a selection of indieWIRE's top undistribited films of 2004. You could make a day of it, heading across the bridge to see how the other half lives, and staying to see the next big thing. The Festival runs April 1-7.

If that's not quite your speed, our friends at SF IndieFest will (in the words of Jeff Ross) "be screening trashy trucker flicks, campy horror and yes, an Elvis movie at THE CHURCH OF ELVIS this Sunday April 3, 9p-2a at The Underground, 484 Haight Street at Fillmore (the old Top). There's no cover, the venue is 21 up, and Bishop, Madhatter and Moonshine will be presenting for your listening pleasure a nice mix of alt rock, indie, rockabilly, new wave, punk and cheesy metal." Come on out to support IndieFest, or just to tell them to update their damn blog.

What about you? Have you seen Sin City? What did you think? Let us know in the comments!
