When The Lights Go Down In The City
Our concert picks for the week of 3/31 - 4/6.
Just when we thought the concert onslaught would never stop, it has started to slow down. Whether the aftermath has left you nursing a hangover or celebrating new musical discoveries, there's no doubt that spring has already sprung.
On Thursday night, Popscene opens early to screen Morrissey's latest DVD "Who Put The 'M' In Manchester," followed by a live set by The Vacation. DNA Lounge has chocolate syrup wrestling with Michael Anthony and the Late Night Sneaky. The flyer advertises Michel Anthony, which is either a typo or perhaps Michael's alter ego from France. Non?
Friday is April Fool's Day, and apparently St. Stupid's Day as well. Despite reading up on St. Stupid's Day, we are still not sure what it is. Nevertheless, there are a few opportunities to celebrate it, starting with the official parade at noon which begins at the foot of Market Street and winds its "snackreligious" way through the financial district. Celebrate St. Stupid's that night at 12 Galaxies, the Herbst Theatre or the Hemlock with Greed Inc. (CD release), The Freak Accident and Candy From Strangers. Also that night, Electrocute rocks The Rickshaw Stop's Club Loaded. SFist would like to know if there are any bands featuring naughty, ironic, half-clad hot males, in the interest of equal opportunity ogling. In the "Parties to which we were invited" department, you'll be able to find SFist Jackson (here's a picture if you wanna be a swell) taking society pics when he's not shaking his ample booty at the 415 party . Highlights include Pam the Funkstress (an SFist hero for her work with The Coop), Toph One (an SFist interviewee), Romanowski (shouted out by an SFist interviewee) and Cool Chris, who we've been starstruck by ever since we started shopping at Groove Merchant. A must attend for the rare-break set. At the 111 Minna Gallery and the House of Shields. How hott is that?
More picks after the jump.
Saturday brings good reason to be in the East Bay, when the Lobot Gallery hosts the TIGERBEAT6 DANCE 'N' DISASTER PARTY, featuring Electrocute, Kid 606, Gold Chains & Sue Cie and locals Total Shutdown. If you're looking for something more mainstream, head to Great American Music Hall where friends of SFist and KFOG favorites Luce will be playing laid-back soundtrack rock from their new album Never Ending. At Swedish American, former Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller plays his Texas alt-pop with singer-songwriter Inara George.
Sunday night summons Swedish rockers Soundtrack of our Lives to Great American. Don't miss the opening set by Canada's The Dears, whose latest release No Cities Left is melodic and melancholy. Keep it real local down at Bottom of the Hill with Parchman Farm and Drunk Horse's hard-partying rockfest.
The bad news is that the Independent's Monday night Cinema Drafthouse isn't happening this week, but the good news is that UK emcee Dizzee Rascal is playing instead. On Tuesday, bringing out the devil horn rock salute for Mastodon and Burning Brides at Slim's. Wednesday you could get all weepy and introspective with the folk of Ray Lamontagne and Missy Higgins at the Fillmore, or you could wave your hands in the air with Doug E Fresh at DNA Lounge.

This is a little late and perhaps a little pointless, but Rhett Miller is not the "former" Old 97's frontman. They haven't disbanded or kicked him out. He's just about to start work on a second solo album. The whole band does have tour dates scheduled for later this spring.
Thanks, Cecilia! We always love good info.
I stand corrected. Thanks for the info & link to tour dates, Cecilia.
