SFist Watches: Movies This Weekend Oscars Special

SFist Watches Oscars 2.25.jpg
SFist enjoys the who big-ass spectacle that is the Oscars, but we have to admit that we've always been really bad at seeing the nominated movies. They all just look so, we don't know, educational or something! Assuming you're not quite as dumb or lazy as we are, perhaps you've seen all the nominated films already. But if you haven't, SFist has you covered.

Many of the nominated films are still in theaters, so you can see them as they're intended (and in the way that most Academy voters, with their screener DVDs, do not). The lovely Presidio Theatre is showing three nominated films, 11-time nominee including Best Picture The Aviator, 7-time nominee including Best Picture Finding Neverland, and 3-time nominee Hotel Rwanda. Sure, you could see these movies in a MegaMultiMassive-Plex, but the Presidio is such a great deco gem that we don't really see why you would.

If we haven't reminded you enough, the reportedly last movie our beloved Coronet Theater will ever show is Million Dollar Baby (7 nominations including Best Picture), so this is your chance to be part of San Francisco Cinema history. If you see this movie this weekend, don't you dare see it anywhere besides the Coronet.

Wierd picture of Oscar maybe playing Charades from these guys, who we suspect stole it from someone else, but we're not the Internet Cops, so we'll leave it at that.

Landmark Theaters is also screening a number of films garnering nominations, including Being Julia, Sideways, Born Into Brothels, and some movies at Opera Plaza that we can't bring ourselves to recommend because that theater SUCKS. Sorry.

If you're still in the mood for Oscar nominated films that are no longer in theatrical release, we'd like to throw in a plug for two of our favorite video stores in the City, the Mission's Lost Weekend Video and the Sunset's Le Video. There, you can find your Shrek 2, your Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and your Before Sunset (we enjoy neither romance films nor Ethan Hawke, but we watched Before Sunset last night and adored it, so SFist says "rent!")

With all of these options, you have no excuse not to have seen at least a few of the nominated movies. And where to show off your knowledge? One of our favorite local theaters, The Balboa, isn't currently showing any Oscar nominees, but they are hosting a fabulous Oscar Party. If we weren't hosting our own bash, you know we'd be heading down Balboa way for fun, costumes, and prizes.

What are your Oscar plans? Any thoughts on the nominations? Let spill it in the comments!

I saw "The Aviator" at the Presidio on Monday and liked it a lot (more than "Million Dollar Baby"!) One thing about the theater though, be warned if you see any of the other films playing there. This former single screen theater is now FOUR screens. "Aviator" has the main, and biggest screen, which is good, but the former balcony is now two more screens, and then there's a teeny-tiny (makes the Opera Plaza theaters look HUGE) "screening room" to the side of the big theater.

Now, I'm glad that the theater was able to stay open, and I guess turning it into a miniplex was the only way they could do it, but I can't say I like it. In fact, I hate it. I hate seeing these glorious old theaters divided up. I hate hearing the other movies playing above me while I'm watching the flick. And I hate that single screen theaters just can't seem to make it in this town!
