S'Wonderful

Something's coming to San Francisco this weekend, something so big, and so exciting, that we couldn't contain our enthusiasm and had to write about it over a month ago. But now the waiting is over, and we can dust off our Princess Leia buns and our Spock ears (which can stand in for elvin ears in a pinch) and join the huddled masses that are just as dorky as us.

WonderCon has come!

That's right, Northern California's answer to Comic-Con is coming to the Moscone Center this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This event is not just about comics, folks. It's about all the things we comic book geeks--er, fans, love!

Friday's highlights include a focus on writer Arnold Drake, who penned comics in the "X-Men" and "Doom Patrol" series as well as writing and producing the cult classic The Flesh Eaters. There will also be a summer movie preview with the folks from Cinefantastique magazine, and a spotlight on comic book artist Neal Adams.

Saturday brings out the big guns with a panel discussion with the great Joss Whedon! He'll be there discussing his Serenity movie with three of the film's stars, Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, and Summer Glau. Writer, director, and die-hard comic book fan Kevin Smith will also make an appearance Saturday for a Q&A session about his upcoming projects, and no doubt a few choice words about the state of comic book movies today. Harvey Pekar is scheduled to appear in an on-stage interview about his new book Our Movie Year. Paris Hilton HAD been announced as a guest a week ago, but we think she may have found out just what kind of people attend these events and decided...she's just not cool enough, and bowed out. Her House of Wax co-star Elisha Cuthbert will be in attendance, as well as the film's producer, Hollywood legend Joel Silver. Saturday night is also the evening of the Masquerade Ball! Remember, you must come in costume, and your costume MUST BE HOMEMADE!!!

More highlights after the jump.

On Sunday you can take in the Starship Smackdown III and find out just who would win in a fight between the Serenity and a Klingon D-7 battle cruiser. Cover artist Adam Hughes will be spotlighted, and the "Trailer Park" will feature the best movie trailers for upcoming releases.

Believe us, this is but a tiny sampling of what can be found at WonderCon this weekend. There's plenty more as well as some promised suprise guests. For a complete schedule, be sure to check their site. A one-day pass is $15 and a three-day pass is a mere $35. A bargain! So, as they say at WonderCon, "Be there, or be squarer than you already are."
