Did Ask Jeeves Buy Bloglines? Don't Ask Jeeves That

The rumors have been floating around that Oakland-based search engine Ask Jeeves is set to purchase Bloglines, a popular site that gives you the latest posts of your favorite blogs all in one place, and for free, no less. Well, if Bloglines' about page is any indication, it's a done deal. The site says clearly, "The company is a property of Ask Jeeves, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASKJ), and is headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area." Actually, we're a day late on that, as Bloglines CEO Mark Fletcher confirmed the rumors yesterday on his blog.

Though we haven't felt the need to ask Jeeves anything in quite a long time (case in point: running the title of this entry through Ask Jeeves yielded no definitive answer), we adore Bloglines, so maybe Ask Jeeves's purchase will restore a little luster to Jeeves's shiny butler shoes. Frankly, we didn't know Ask Jeeves still had any money to burn. Let's ask them. Once again, no definitive answer. Even the Magic Eight Ball gives it up more often than that.

On his blog, Fletcher says that the Ask Jeeves partnership will improve searching blogs for information. "We don't think that world-class blog search exists yet," he writes. Does that sound like he's setting the stage for a Bloglines-Technorati smackdown? Sounds like that to us.
