When The Lights Go Down In The City
We've already broken our New Year's resolution to not be late anymore, but we can still rally to see more live music in '05. Things remain a bit askew during this first week of January (holiday parties are still happening?) but there are many musical options if you need to get out and about. Or as those kooky Canadians like to say, oot and aboot.
Groove is in the heart tonight down at the 111 Minna Gallery, where local promoters Urbangroove/SF and Chakra present HEAL, a fundraiser for immediate relief of tsunami victims. DJs include Cheb i Sabbah (Six Degrees Records), Riffat Sultana & Party, Ravi (LA), Nihal, Sunil Kapadia and more. 100% of the $25 ticket price will be donated to Doctors Without Borders. If you’re in the mood to support local music tonight, head down to Slim’s where they’ll be celebrating the 8th annual One Night Stand featuring members of local bands playing their favorite cover songs. Cafe du Nord has the live hip hop of Felonius with Psychokinetics and DJ Raw B. L.A.'s Midnight Movies will bring their sultry, spooky sounds and Nico-esque vocals to Rickshaw Stop. Listen to samples of Midnight Movies' music if you can get their e-card to work (we couldn't).
Saturday night is all about celebrating San Francisco's local music scene. The Bill Graham Foundation presents "Bill's Birthday Party" down at the Fillmore, with a film screening, memorabilia auction, live music and free cake and ice cream. The legendary documentary Fillmore: The Last Days will be showing, featuring Santana, Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane, along with shorts, video clips, out-takes and more. We're guessing there will be some local legends in attendance as well. Bottom of the Hill has a double CD release party with Elephone and 20 Minute Loop. When we say "double CD release party" we mean two CD release celebrations in one night; neither band is releasing a double CD that we know of. Every Movie a Picture also plays. Built Like Alaska is having their CD release party down at The Independent, thanks to the lovely lasses of Playing in Fog. Loquat and Audio Out Send will open the show.
Sunday's selections include the dance-synth of Communique, the dream harmonies of Mini Pop and the schizophrenic noise of Idiot Pilot at Bottom of the Hill. OCS, a.k.a. the acoustic sounds of the Coachwhips' John Dwyer, is also playing at the Make Out Room with Jen Schande and Oliver Stafford (of goodbye brian). Tuesday night offers up Casiotone for the Painfully Alone with The Capricorns and Secret Synthi at 12 Galaxies. And you know that Wednesday brings, aside from Nate's benefit at 12 Galaxies. What we're talkin' bout' is the first of indie it-band Arcade Fire's three sold out shows at Great American Music Hall. All those tickets and none for SFist. Sniff...we'll be alright.
