A (Half) Year of Firsts for SFist

first_steps.jpgOh, man, how quickly the months do pass when you're blogging. It was just a few months ago that we responded to Gothamist's call for San Francisco contributors. Then LAist had the nerve to go public in July, and steps were taken to ensure that underemployed San Francisco critics had a voice to counterbalance that of underemployed Los Angeles screenwriters. Since we started, sites have gone live in DC, London and Toronto, making us the western corner of Gothamist's snarky empire. In the meantime, we've piled up a bunch of firsts, this being our first year of firsts, so we present our first list of first firsts after the jump.

July

First Actual Post, by SFist Rita.

First time SFist Jackson sneaks a post in behind another post because he was too lazy to write it on time.

August

First week of posts, done secretly so that people won't make fun of us.

First post after being welcomed publicly into the Gothamist family.

First time we used the so best Gav and Kim sex picture.

First (and probably last) time something was so damned important, we posted on it twice in a row.

SFist' Jackson's first Culinary Digest which was so popular, we sent it to a retirement home.

Followed the next day by his first Bay Blogger Thursday, which has been a bit more popular we think.

SFist Rita's first SFist Blotter, where SFist Jackson burdened her with a lame graphic.

First time least-likely-to-be-considered-a-drama-queen SFist Cheshire posts on the local theater scene.

First of many times resident Mick LaSalle antidote SFist Eve post on saving neighborhood theaters.

First of many requests to send the Essefficist some damned questions, already. We know you have questions! Send them to the f**king Essefficist!

The first person who agreed to one of SFist Emily's interviews. She was given the job because the rest of us are anti-social misanthropes.

First time Rita chews on a digest of the local weeklies.

September

First Monday Morning Quarterback, done purely to make Tien Mao happy.

First time Craig Newmark left a comment on the site (with his phone number, no less!).

First SFist poll to settle once and for all the question of what to call ourselves. SFist Jackson voted for Esseffist, bitches.

First bar review by the esteemed tippler and tipper SFist Andrew.

First time we bowed to public criticism and asked someone to take us to task.

First time SFist Jackson confused "expert" with "drunken lout" and spoke in public.

First Tuesday DVD roundup from witster SFist Jon.

First time SFist beat anyone to a story, even if it was only by a few hours.

October

First mention in the local press, courtesy of the editor of the SF Weekly thanks to a suggestion by Nate Cavalieri, who found out about us through our first press release.

First time SFist Shane had to eat crow in public thanks to a defeat at the hands of LAist and their playoff-bound Dodgers (who proceeded to bow out in the first round).

First time we reviewed a product thanks to the manufacturer sending SFist Tara some of their product for free.

First week in TV by our boob-tube expert SFist Rain.

First time we make Gothamist Jen jealous by dangling Pandas in front of her and gloating.

First time we got caught in the middle of a publishing battle so heated, it's currently being used to keep the Kristi Yamaguchi ice skating rink chilled.

Finally our first week in music shows by industry impresario SFist Krissy.

First election coverage week, with interviews, proposition analysis and all sorts of other stuff that you normally read the Guardian for.

November

First post by the man who both inspired the call for an ombudsman and then answered it, Matthew Newton.

First preliminary election results post, inaccurate because written while both drunk and depressed by SFist Jackson.

First election results post that actual got the facts right by SFist Rita.

First thoughts of emigration entertained by SFist Emily.

First thoughts of secession entertained by SFist Jon.

First post that may actually have a positive effect on the world by SFist Mary-Lynn.

First advertiser, Westside Organics, and first time we realized that we need to find a book on organizing contests.

First dose of Monday coffee from SFist Jeremy, the Trimethyldioxypurist.

First time we declare a post "Best. Post. Evar." -- SFist Matt's journey into the world of fuzzy bunnies.

First original blind item, which we're totally pissed that no one even bothered to guess at.

December

First public event, Bay Blotto Thursday, which lived up to it's title and then some.

First time SFist sent a writer and a photographer to a "news scene" to do a "real report." Luckily, it was on a Saturday.

Our first break from blogging, organizing bloggers, explaining blogs to old people, fiddling with the layout of a blog and otherwise just getting drunk like we used to do before SFist came to hurry our descent towards rock bottom.

So stick around to look for more firsts and probably a few lasts in 2005! Happy New Year!
