SFist Reads: Next Year
SFist has big reading plans for next year, so we're reserving books online from the SF Public Library, and buying books from local independent bookstores, so we can have at least one resolution we won't crap out on.
Sfist Jon grudgingly admits: "Okay- I want to read War & Peace this year. Because every year I say to myself it's time I should read War & Peace (aren't we supposed to read it?) and every year I don't. I actually picked it up once and read through the first twenty pages but got so confused by all the characters long names and their relationship to other characters with long lames, I gave up on it. Maybe this year. Maybe not."
If you hadn't already guessed it, SFist Jackson is one ambitious guy. Get his list for the new year:
"I keep meaning to finish the Tufte books on visual design, but the coffee table format makes them very difficult to lug around on public transportation.
"Every year I tell myself I'm going to tackle Cervantes' Don Quixote in Spanish. Never happens. Instead I'll probably content myself with translating signs in the Mission.
"I want to find an English-language Manga with lots of busty Japanese schoolgirls kicking ass. I'm a lonely, lonely otaku. (If you haven't already read it Jackson, may we suggest Battle Royale? Anyone else have ideas for Jackson? Hit him with 'em in the comments!)
"More local blogs. I'm bad, I'm still stuck in the habit of reading the big nationals. It's going to be nothing but anonymous chumps in '05."
SFist Matt makes the much more realistic goal of re-reading Lemony Snicket books 1-3, because the movie seems to have mixed them up rather badly. Oh well.
Today's profiled SFist Mary-Lynn exposes herself even more by admitting that she planss on reading Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin. She notes: "I have carried this bloody book through 3 apartments, 5 vacations and 2 continents and still haven't read it. 2005 is the year, dammit!" She adds that "The Story of Philosophy by Will Durant has been sitting around for less time but I think as a paperback it will be making some trips and moves with me this year. So while reading it is a longshot I predict it will become the Winter's Tale of 2005.
