Locals! Locals! Fresh Locals! SFist has got fresh Locals! We got our hair cut in Cupertino yesterday and have to say it's a great little town (Apple!). Brian Singer (no, not THAT Bryan Singer) hails from there. On days like the one that a giant tree crushed his car in Cole valley, we bet he wishes he never left. On most other days Brian seems pretty happy with San Francisco, after all his favorite store his here.
Brian is the creative force behind 1000 journals, one of the coolest traveling projects ever. In fact stop reading SFist for a minute and click on that link. Cool, right? From our um, hmm, "BRIEF" purusal of the site, we think that you could probably spend many happy hours of your employer's time there. Besides that project, Brian is up to all kinds of other amazing things, check out his comments after the jump for more of them.
Name
Brian Singer
Introduce yourself in one sentence
Yes, just like the movie director, except that he spells his name with
a "y", and is famous.
Age and Occupation
31, Graphic Designer
Home Town
I was born in Virginia, but we moved to the South Bay when I was 3, so
I consider Cupertino my home town.
How long have you lived in the Bay Area and Where?
> (city, neighborhood etc.) and WHY?
I've been in SF for 4 1/2 years, living in Cole Valley, Potrero
Hill/Dogpatch, and Western Addition. I've lived in the Bay Area for 28
years.
Favorite website
www.nosepilot.com It's beautiful.
And my sites, obviously: (shameless self-promotion)
www.1000journals.com
www.madeyouthink.org
Favorite dot com or local business
Dot com = Google - so very very useful
Local business = Good Vibrations - for their message and company
structure.
What I'm currently Reading
The Art of Looking Sideways
Next up, The Alienist
Best Deal in San FranciscoPublic Transit
Favorite mode of transportationSee above
Best Band or Musician to come out of the Bay AreaI just saw Green Day perform, and they put on an excellent show.
Perhaps not the best, but pretty damn good.
Favorite local hangoutThe Toronado for beers. Center for the Book, for classes. SF MoMA, for
inspiration. The list goes on..
SF has the BEST:people.
You've never lived in SF until:You've left, only to realize how much everywhere else sucks.
Favorite Bay area politician of past or present:I don't like politicians very much, but to be fair, that's probably
because I haven't met many.
Best solicitation from a pan handler:Not so much a pan handler, but a guy standing on the corner of 16th and Valencia, at night, in the freezing cold, selling his photocopied underground comics for 50 cents each. "Come on... I'm cold, and making about $1 an hour... buy a comic". I bought two.
You can tell someone is a local here IF:They're wearing layers, it's all about the layers.
SF would be soooo much better if only:Parking was plentiful and free.
Best Burrito:I'm still a fan of Pancho Villa.
Best Restaurant:Today, it's Sushi Zone. Tomorrow, it'll depend on my mood.
Best movie scene filmed in or about SF:Why, the Rock, of course. Actually, this might be strange, but I
thought American Pimp was a fascinating documentary, and they spent a
bit of time covering a pimp named "Fillmore Slim". Living so close to
Fillmore street made me feel like a part of the story.
I want all the SFists out there to know:We are not alone.
Tell us a San Francisco Story:I used to live in Cole Valley. One day, after a storm, I was going to drive down to San Jose, to visit my girlfriend at the time. As I walked to my car, I noticed a large tree was laying where I had parked. It was
blocking half the street, and covering my car. My car was literally
crushed. For those of you who have always pondered the question "who do I call to get a huge tree off my car", the answer is: the Fire
Department.
Question you'd ask if you were doing this interview:How about the best artist, or author to come out of the Bay Area? Great Idea!!! we've already added the artist one, and the author one is next in line. thanks!
