The nominees for the 47th Annual GRAMMY Awards were announced yesterday in Hollywood, with homeboys Green Day earning an impressive six nominations. That's four less than Kanye West, two less than Alicia Keys and Usher, but one more than Norah, Loretta and Prince.
Billie Joe, Mike, and Tré Cool are honored for American Idiot (the album and the single) in the categories of Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, Best Rock Song, Best Rock Album, and Best Short Form Music Video. American Idiot co-producer Rob Cavallo was also nominated for Producer of the Year for his work on the album. Those GRAMMY voters like you, Green Day, they really like you!
Other Bay area nominees include Tom Waits for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance ("Metropolitan Glide") and Metallica for Best Hard Rock Performance ("Some Kind of Monster"). We're positive that there are additional bay area artists nominated for the hundred-odd awards, but our knowledge has been tapped. Please school us on the local artists we missed in the comments section.
You can cheer on Green Day, Tom Waits and Metallica when the GRAMMY Awards air on CBS February 13th. Since they only televise a handful of awards, we anticipate the telecast will show mainly Alicia, Usher and Kanye trading off acceptance speeches, interrupted briefly by a boring speech from Neil Portnow. If only the award for Best Comedy Album was televised; we want to hear Triumph The Insult Comic Dog whip the CBS censors into a frenzy when he accepts his award for Come Poop With Me.

The Standing Room would want me to say that Michael Tilson Thomas and the SF Symphony were nominated for their recording of the Mahler Four, and that local composer John Adams has a number of pieces up for a variety of awards too (like Green Day, Adams also lives in the East Bay hills!)
