When SFist hears that Beastie Boys song, we automatically think about checking out reserved books from the San Francisco Public Library. We wish there were a song that reminded us of our great local independent bookstores, if you can think of one, tell us about it in the comments!
SFist Alex has been reading Lessons In Virtual Tour Photography by Chris Bachelder. Its a wonderful and bizarre e-book from McSweeney's about The Secret of All Existence. And it's free.
SFist Emily has finished off the term with a bang: a thousand page tome entitled Foundations of Social Theory by James S. Coleman. While the book is way too long to be totally recommendable, the chapters on corporate governance are very interesting. Seems as though we went wrong when corporations were given the same rights as "natural persons". That step down the slippery slope of corporate power grab actual occurred in a railroad case in Santa Clara County. Go Bay Area!
Our faithful readwers will be happy to hear that when our Essefficist isn't pondering the questions you send him (or pondering why he hasn't received any questions at all) he is reading Labyrinths, which is not the movie with Bowie and Muppets, but is instead a collection of stories by Jorge Luis Borges.
SFist Eve is awake late into the night with Ring, the first in Koji Suzuki's Ringu trilogy. Yeah, we've all seen both movies of The Ring, which were scary for their images and "cat scares" . This book gives you a different kind of fear, as what you imagine as you read is far more frightening that anything that can be projected onto a screen. We look forward to reading the next two books, throwing away all our video tapes, and huddling terrified in bed with the dog.
