Weekly view of the music SFists use to keep themselves sane

Oh we've got picks for you! King Floyd - Groove Me: If you haven't figured it out, SFist Jackson would be the editor of New Orleanist if only he could find a job there. No offense, EssEff! One of the hottest colt 45's in our stable, a mint pressing from a hott French Quarter shop.

Kool and The Gang - Who's Gonna Take the Weight?: From the Live at the Sex Machine album, a first pressing we bought at Groove Merchant (and then saw a much, much cheaper repress of -- drat!). Once we had it on real loud, and the UPS guy rang to deliver a package. On his way out,he asked, "What's that funky shit you playin?" Early Kool and The Gang, people, early Kool and The Gang.

Ray Charles - I've Got A Woman: We've been rocking Ray constantly
since he passed on to the shooting gallery in the sky, and loved seeing our hometown get some dap in the movie when Ray belted this
hymn-turned-ode-to-easy-pleasure on Jackson Street in Seattle.

Frankie Lymon - After the Laughter: Y'all will recognize this intro
hook from the Wu's "Tears" off 36 Chambers (R.I.P. O.D.B.). Possibly a better child wonder than Jackson 5-era Michael. Possibly.

The Carpenters - Superstar: Nothing like maudlin for the Holidays.
Ever since we saw Todd Haynes underground Carpenters-with-puppets
classic, we've been obsessed. We're surprised Portishead hasn't done a cover - that would be f**king awesome! Maybe Jackson should check out the "If I were a Carpenter" Compilation... one of the best all time compilations. ever. period.

SFist Rita has the following on her agenda for the week: going to amoeba some time this week to look for the unicorns' "who will cut our hair when we're gone," john adams and the kronos quartet's "john's book of alleged dances," and maaaaybe the britney spears greatest hits IF she can find it used. And no folks, she's not messing with you. As Rita puts it, "Woman can not live by Indie Rock alone".

SFist Mary-Lynn's been rocking out to the following: Livin', Lovin', Losin': Songs of the Louvin Brothers - Various Artists She picked it up in Nashville in the summer.
The Louvin Brothers were a close-harmony act from the 30s-50s and the songs are sort of what I think of as old country (the only kind I like).

Hang on Little Tomato - Pink Martini
Which Mary-Lynn CLAIMS she didn't just buy it because she liked the album cover. RIGHT.

And, of course, Neko Case's new CD. Because, well, duh.
