Nerds and Frat Guys Rejoice at the DVDs This Week

hero2.jpgIt's probably really offensive that SFist is making gross generalizations like nerds are into Spider-Man and frat guys lurve Adam Sandler, but, um, some of our best friends are nerds and frat guys! So there! Anyway, our best friends are super psyched at this week's crop of DVD releases, which has the comic book, beer-commercial-guy, asian-film-fan, and (in the words of SFist Matty-Matt) "mind-numbingly gay" crowds covered.

So, let's see what the fuss is about this week:

Spider-Man 2 was pretty popular, we hear. We had a good time when we saw it in the theater, and we like Alfred Molina in just about anything. The DVD release has tons of extras, including a documentary, a blooper reel (frequently our favorite part of a DVD) and some easter eggs.

And if that's not enough comic-book nerdishness for ya, there's always the Daredevil Director's Cut. Remember when you were watching the regular Daredevil and you were thinking "If only there were more Daredevilly goodness in this AWESOME movie?"? Well, your prayers have been answered. This new Daredevil comes with 100% more Coolio, so don't say we didn't warn you.

While all your cool friends have had Hero on DVD since, like, 1922, this week's release marks the US DVD release of our one-time big budget pick of the week. Extras include QT and Jet Li kissing each other's asses in a short interview piece, animated storyboards, and a featurette on the making of.

Joking about frad-guys aside, Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are actually pretty funny, even when you're not baked. And now you can get them in one boxed set. Insert your own "price is wrong, bitch" joke here.

This next one is so good that we have to quote SFist Matty-Matt directly:

Today sees the release of Samantha: An American Girl Holiday, based on one of those American Girl novels that ladies read when they're in the 3rd grade. I have no particular interest in either girls or America, but this direct-to-video title features Mia Farrow as a "moneyed grandmother" (sure to be fabulous) and Annasophia Robb,
aka Violet Beauregard in the worrisome Charlie & the Chocolate Factory remake. The caliber of her performance in Samantha may be a cause for either panic or relief regarding the quality of the new C&TCF.

Well, folks, there you go. A little of something for everyone this week. Ca't wait until next week's horn of car-chasin', drug-smugglin', ball-dodging plenty!
