SFist Cares About Literacy
SFist knows we're awesome so we find it really sad that some people can't read us. It would be one thing if people didn't want to read us, but there are plenty of people who can't read us. They can't read at all.
Project READ helps adults and adolescents learn to read. What? You think schools do that? Did you see how many school-funding propositions were defeated? Additionally, there are people, especially in California, who've moved here from elsewhere and while they may be perfectly literate in their mothertongue, can't manage much in their adopted second language.
Offered through local libraries, Project READ volunteers work one-on-one with students who have signed up to learn one of the most basic skills needed to thrive in our society: reading.
We understand you might not be able to devote that much time. Fine. But, you still need to eat, right? Well then, next Monday, November 15th you can pay $10 towards Project READ programs in Redwood City and get a sneak peek at the new Whole Foods opening up on El Camino and Jefferson.
The Whole Foods Gala, featuring delicious food, music, and a tour of the new store, will be held for all to enjoy from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Monday November 15th at the new store, 1250 Jefferson Avenue (at El Camino). A $10 donation will enable Redwood City Project READ to help more than 500 children and adults being tutored to improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
Come on yuppies! You know you want to get your free range pasta and organic shoe polish! $10!
