SFist Cares

virtual_tour4_small.jpgAfter sitting around this morning nursing hangovers, wounded egos and sad souls, we realized that life must go on and for many people in the area life is already tough and will only get tougher. So SFist is going to bring you a weekly column highlighting local charities or non-profit organizations looking to make everyone's lives and the places we live just a little bit better. You can be angry and hate the government just consider also working with, donating to or generally supporting some local organizations that can use our help. We're not above guilting you into it. Getting agitated every four years and yelling at all your friends, who by the way agree with you and wish you'd stop already, is played out. Working every day to make the world a better place is sexy. And who doesn't want to be sexy?

We're going to start simply: the San Francisco Food Bank is gearing up for the holiday season. While we can't forget that people are hungry all year round, the holidays are busy times for food banks.

"Nearly 150,000 San Franciscans, including children, low-income families, seniors on fixed incomes, people living with HIV or AIDS, the homeless and people struggling to move from welfare to work, live with the threat of hunger. In San Francisco, one in four children and one in five adults, including seniors, cannot afford to meet their basic nutritional needs. From the Richmond to Hunters Point, Chinatown to Visitacion Valley, hunger exists throughout the City." (from the SF Food Bank Fact Sheet)

One in four kids. That's incredible. We have to do better than that.

Take the Hunger 101 online tutorial to learn what it's like to be hungry in San Francisco. And yes, skipping lunch because you forgot your wallet at home and complaining about being hungry makes you a wimp. Suck it up.

You've got two choices to help here. You can donate food or money or, let's be optimistic, food and money. You could also donate your time to sort food, work at events or, if you really just can't get enough of the keyboard - they're even looking for volunteers with computer experience.

Please consider helping out the San Francisco Food Bank and the thousands of people they help each year. You sexy beast.
