Halloween came and went with a minimum of fuss in the city -- as one officer noted, there were 250,000 people and only five punches thrown (working out to a ratio of one punch per 50,000 folks). One of those punches was thrown around 10:30 p.m. at Market and Castro, where a man complained that someone pushed him, and the alleged pusher then hit the complainer in the nose. Not great, but still, much better than in 2002, when four people were stabbed or slashed.

Vallejo rapper Mac Dre was killed in a shooting in Kansas City early Monday morning after a concert. Mac Dre, who released a number of thug life songs in the 90s, had recently given up his life of crime to launch a new record label and mentor young aspiring rappers.

And Oakland busted 48 johns and 31 prostitutes in an East Oakland sting operation last Friday. Johns caught included a man looking for love with his elderly mother in the car, an off-duty officer from the San Francisco Housing Authority (with uniform pants and boots still on), and a man driving a big rig full of furniture (with the furniture hanging off the side of the truck). Oakland has emphasized that they are focusing on reducing the number of pimps and johns on the street, noting that one prostitute picked up was just 14 years old.
