This Week in DVDs

poster.jpgHaving trouble picking what to rent next from Netflix? Bought every DVD in existence and need to see what'll be out this week? Really bored at work and looking for something to read? Well, we here at SFist are here to help with a listing of some of the big titles being released this week on DVD. And if you're still having trouble deciding, we'll give you our very own Pick o' the Week.

Here are the big titles for the week:

Van Helsing- This movie was big for about an hour or two this spring before everyone realized it sucked. Somehow, somebody thought it would be a cool idea to take Van Helsing from the Bram Stoker novels, usually portrayed as an old German dude with a really bad accent, and turn him into some sort of Indiana Jones type figure played by the guy who played Peter Allen on Broadway (oh yeah, we know Hugh Jackman also played Wolverine, but did you know he also starred in Oklahoma!?). Oh, and in case chasing Vampires aren't exciting enough, the movie also features the Wolfman and Frankenstein- kind of like those old Abbot & Costello movies. Except not as funny. Also stars Kate Beckinsale's breasts.

Garfield- Remember way back in the '80's when for some inexplicable reason, Garfield became really popular and everyone was into buying Garfield schwag? What was up with that? While we don't begrudge Bill Murray the opportunity to cash in a big whomping check every once in awhile- a small price to pay for having him star in Lost in Translation or the Royal Tenenbaums- we hope this paycheck was pretty big.

A Cinderalla Story- All you need to know is that it stars Hillary Duff (an actress we can't quite take seriously due to her last name being the verysame name as Homer's favorite beverage) and some guy who is on a WB show. Don’t really think we’re part of the movie’s target audience.

The Oliver Stone Collection- We do have to admit that Oliver Stone movies are kind of fun in that drugged out and paranoid kind of way, but as it's been a long time since our drugged-out and paranoid days, we'll skip these.

Our Pick After the Jump

buffy3.jpgOur Pick- Season 3 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Look, if you really want to pick up Van Helsing because you're in the mood for some good Vampire Slaying, don't rent the movie. Instead, pick up some Buffy DVD's. For those who know, we don't even have say much more as you probably have every season already on DVD (plus all the videos and import DVDs too) but for those who never gave it a chance, do so. Now. The show was a brilliant mix of comedy, horror, WB teen drama, philosophical treatise, and in one brilliant night, even a musical. Somehow, the show could shift from from all those various genres within minutes and make it all work. And while picking between Season 2 and Season 3 of Buffy is kind of like trying to pick between Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's, we're going to go with Season 3 here as it's the more consistently fulfilling season. Plus, the season's climatic, ten-minute fight-to-the-death between leather clad Buffy and leather-clad Slayer-gone bad Faith that just might be the Greatest Moment of TV Ever.
