Wow, that was a doozy. Who knew journalism would involve so much drinking? Oh, wait, that was actually just SFist medicating our neurotic anxiety. That's right, we went and listened to a number of crazy intelligent people and their crazy genius ideas about the future of media last night at the Online News Association's "State of (Bay Area) Online Journalism." And we spoke, too, albeit briefly - time was running short and the other speakers were pretty much smarter than us, so we kept it short.
We chatted a bit with Seth Liss of the Quick Hits column in the Mercury News, but unfortunately he had to run before the speakers go started. The first speaker, Mark Fiore, was funny, and we recommend that you check out some of his animated shorts. Jeff Veen was incredibly enthusastic, and gave a shout out to SFist in his speech - he sure knows how to get on our good side! He also pointed out Upcoming, which SFist will now be using as our ultra-secret source on all the haps in the music scene.
When it was our turn, we sat down next to Mary Hodder, who had some really genius things to say about the feedback loop that's developed between journalists and bloggers, highlighting examples from the recent Memogate controversy. She's posted an in-depth analysis at Napsterization. We simply hammed it up with some terrible jokes about blogging naked, and while we had a whole speech prepared (with quotes, no less!) about the Peter Landesman/Daniel Radosh dustup a few months back, we ended up just talking about ourselves and SFist in true, narcissistic, blogger fashion. You can listen to it over on Niall Kennedy's blog once he's done working on the audio.
The panel of distinguished editors - Bill Gannon, Jeff Pelline, Tim Olson and Scott Rosenberg then gave their impressions on what they're doing at Yahoo, CNet, KQED and Salon, respectively. Bill Gannon and the Yahoo News crew then took SFist out for a drink and were even nice enough to give us a ride home. We promise we'll send all our links to AP and Reuters pieces your way, Yahoo! Keep in touch. We'd also like to thank Bruce Koon of Knight Ridder Digital and Neil Chase of CBS Marketwatch for moderating and expensing the booze and snacks, as well as CNet for hosting the event. Finally, we'd like to thank Susan Mernit who originally invited us to speak and Michael Fitzgerald for putting it all together. Cheers!
