The Oakland Raiders were the first Bay Area team to put up a W this season, improving to 1-1, after getting all up in opposing quarterback Drew Bledsoe's grille to slip past the Buffalo Bills 13-10 in Oakland. The bad news is that Jerry Rice's 274 consecutive games with a reception streak is now over. SFist still thinks Jerry is the greatest football player ever. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers come to town next week in the scurviest of rivalries between Pirate-themed franchises, in case you didn't get yer fill of yesterday's Talk Like a Pirate Day, matey.
The 49ers played a wild one in New Orleans but fell to 0-2. It was close, 30-27, and though the niners had multiple opportunities in the fourth quarter they squandered them all and ended up with another tough loss. Still, rookie Ken Dorsey looked good in his first NFL start and coach Dennis Erickson should probably be happy with his young team's performance so far, even if they aren't piling up victories. They have their work cut out for themselves next Sunday when they travel to Seattle to take on the division rival Seahawks.
Stanford had a bye week and Cal's game against Southern Miss was cancelled due to Hurricane Ivan, so you'll have to wait until next week for Pac-10 football action when Stanford takes on USC and their execrable fight song. Cal has their bye week next weekend, meaning a three-week layoff for the team, which can't be good - SFist hopes the Bears are busy catching up on their studies in the meantime.
