Fight! A frustrated Texas Rangers pitcher threw a batboy's chair into the crowd at the Oakland Coliseum last night, hitting one fan in the head and breaking the nose of another. The pitcher, Frank Francisco, was booked on aggravated assault charges. The fight seems to have broken out at the top of the ninth (game tied) after a male fan began taunting Rangers relief pitcher Doug Brocail; several Rangers and their coach had to be restrained from going into the stands, and then Francisco threw the chair. The A's won on a single by Chavez in the 10th inning, and are still leading the AL West division, two games up on the Angels.
Two upset groups of mourners in the East Bay may have triggered a violent Monday evening in Oakland, leaving two dead and thirteen injured. One group of mourners was at Highland Cemetery to remember a man murdered in Oakland, while another group was there for a man who had killed himself in jail. Among the 200 people present between the two groups, words were exchanged, and one person was injured at the cemetery. Then later in the afternoon, one person was found shot with an assault weapon (thanks, NRA), a car that contained 5 people with gunshot wounds crashed into a fence, and then there was a drive-by shooting at people gathered a makeshift shrine for one of the people at the funeral. The cops caution, though, that it's not entirely clear whether the incident at the cemetery has anything to do with any of the shootings.
And finally, South Bay-based PayPal has announced that if they catch you buying porn, running gambling rings, or selling prescription drugs through their efficient money-laundering -- we mean, "online cash payment" -- system, they'll fine you up to $500 for each offense. They could also sue you. (While we applaud the sentiment, SFist nonetheless wonders how a $500 offense is going to stop these reputed multimillion dollar offshore mafia deals going through PayPal that we hear so much about).
