Have you ever pondered day light savings time out side of a clock shop? Noticed the number of dwellings that Bob Buckter has acted as color consultant for? Gotten your hair done at Yu's Barbershop, operated by the "famous operator" himself?
Take a break from reading SFist and dial 415-364-1465. The voice on the answering machine is that of Kate Pocrass, detailing this week's Mundane Journey. Described as an "eagerness to interact with strangers in common atmospheres", Kate outlines directions on how to go to a specific site in San Francisco to observe or experience something. No matter how long you've lived in the area, you are guaranteed to be mesmerized, tantalized, and entertained by the weekly excursions. Kate has a gift for noticing the small details that sum up to make San Francisco such a unique and marvelous place.
Kate is also the creative force behind a portable art exhibit that she wears to different locations for a month each year. Each venue is intended to elevate every day places and happenings, and creates an alternative way to view and experience art. Kate also has a known a penchant for soap theft.
Read on for an anything BUT mundane look at SF through Kate's eyes.
Name: Kate Pocrass
Age and Occupation: 26, daily redefinition of the stripe & square
Home Town: East Coast
How long have you lived in the Bay Area and Where
I’ve lived in San Francisco for a little over 5 years. Moved here for
grad school, then proceeded to get tangled in its web of
micro-climates, burritos & walkability. I have been lucky enough to
have first, the Panhandle, & presently, Dolores Park, as my front
yards.
Favorite website:
thisamericanlife.org About 4 years ago I became a bit obsessed
with listening to the archives.
Favorite local business
Impossible to pick one business so I will instead pick a street. Clement Street.
Outer Clement- the trifecta at 23rd- consisting of Thanh Thanh Café (Tofu Vietnamese Sandwich), Quickly, and the 4Star. Then there is beautiful Inner Clement - Green Apple Books, Genki, Haig’s, 6th Ave. Aquarium.
What I’m currently Reading
Sex, Drugs, & Cocoa Puffs (Chuck Klosterman) & The New Yorker (they just never stop coming – I can’t keep up)
SF has the BEST:
Indian Pizza – Hooray for Zante’s!
You’ve never lived in SF until: you’ve experienced total lack of
personal space & tact on the 30 Stockton.
Favorite Bay area politician of past or present:
Hall McAllister, who just missed being elected Governor of
Georgia, arrived in San Francisco in 1849 and was a lieutenant in
the California Guards, and as a lawyer against the lawless
element known as the Hounds. And now we have McAllister street
to remember him by. Three cheers for Hall!
You can tell someone is local here IF:
1) they are excited to swap craigslist stories.
2) they use craigslist as a bargaining chip at garage sales
As in "well, I could sell that on craigslist for…" or "I saw one of
those on craigslist last week for…"
3) craigslist is responsible for at least one important part of their
life. (living situation, dating situation, job situation, free sofa)
SF would be soooo much better if only:
People could drive in the rain.
Best Burrito in the City: In the city – I will have to go with Cancun.
Now - this is hard to say - but - under the highway on 4th Street in
San Rafael there is a better one. Taqueria San Jose. Words
cannot describe.
Best Restaurant:
Minami
Best movie scene filmed in or about SF:
the Alcatraz scene in "So I Married An Axe Murderer." I also like to
go there to clear my head…
I want all the SFists out there to know: Being ironic is better in
small doses.
Question you'd ask if you were doing this interview: What is your
favorite San Francisco intersection & why?
