More Mission woe -- over the weekend, there was a drive-by shooting on 26th and Mission on Friday 8:30 p.m., a stabbing at that same corner a day later, and a shooting at 19th and Guerrero. Kamala Harris came by to check things out (and get a burrito). In other weekend crime news, a man stabbed his ex-girlfriend in the neck in the Haight at the McDonalds on Stanyan, and three men were stabbed in a bar in the Bayview area. There were also two shootings at Divisadero and Eddy (the cops think gang-related).
Oh no! Rich people suffer too! Someone ran off with the bronze statue of Hermes outside the hoity-toity exclusive University Club (that’s the one across the street from the Fairmont on Nob Hill that lets women in). The statue is 300 pounds, so the chief operating officer seemed a little puzzled as to how someone could have snuck over with a forklift last week. The University Club has concluded that this is the unfortunate consequence of their generosity in sharing public art with the public. Hermes was previously stolen back in the 70s, but returned after Herb Caen wrote a sad essay about it in the Chron and a guy saw it in someone’s basement.
The dark side of pimping your ride? A recent rash of car thefts in Hayward have targeted cars with tricked-out chrome wheels. Four cars have been stolen in about two weeks. In two incidents, women driving alone were forced at gunpoint to drive the car out of Hayward and then told to get out of the car, and in the last incident, the gunman grabbed the keys from a driver at a gas station and took off. Three cars have been found, two with the chrome stolen, and the police are still looking for the fourth.
