Things aren't looking good for professional sports in San Jose. It seems that because of dismal attendance and the lack of a new stadium, the Anschutz Group is looking to sell the San Jose Earthquakes to Mexico's Club America [Espanol], who would then shop them to cities in Texas - including Houston, San Antonio and Dallas.

With a large latino population, lots of top junior and college teams, a lack of competition for entertainment dollars, two recent Major League Soccer championships and probably the only American soccer player who's a household name - the hunky Landon Donovan, star of the surprising United States World Cup team in 2002 - you would think the Eartquakes would be sitting pretty. Instead they're drawing 4,000 fans below league average at San Jose State's Spartan stadium.

The Mercury News [reg. required] points out that this would seriously hurt the chance of San Jose getting a shot at moving the Oakland A's down 880. It would also mean that soccer fans looking for a fix would have to travel all the way to LA, although they could enjoy watching the Galaxy in a new stadium along with nearly twice the fans San Jose is currently drawing.
