SFist loves the movies, however we can get them. While we enjoy the theater experience, we sometimes prefer to watch our movies at home, where we can fully recline, play with a cat, or eat something that would be considered publicly disgusting.
One of the many great things about living in the Bay Area is the number of great places from which to rent movies. While folks in the fly-over are stuck with Hollywood, Blockbuster, or the endangered mom & pop type places, here we have an an embarassment of riches.
With the advent of several video delivery services, however, the country is put on a much more even playing field. SFist is a subscriber to Los Gatos based Netflix, and we hear great things about San Francisco based GreenCine. There's a DVD rental service from Walmart, but we try not to think about it.
One of the great things about these delivery services (besides the whole "all the movies you can watch for one flat fee" thing) is how they become a diversion in themselves. SFist reads this great blog regularly to keep up with the world of video delivery and spends countless hours reordering our queue. This vigilance doesn't always pay off, as when House II arrived at our home (is our drinking to such a point that we black out and add things to our NetFlix list?)
Other times we end up with great gems in the rough, such as 2003's Shade. Get this cast: Sylvester Stallone, Gabriel Byrne, Jamie Foxx, and a score of other folks make up this really interesting movie about poker hustlers in LA. We never would have rented this movie if it weren't for the Erica Jongish nature of Netflix.
What are some great movies you've "accidentally" discovered? We've shared with you, so it's your turn to give back. Not that we're keeping track or anything...
